David Corenswet Superman Legacy Movie, Arriving in 2025!
There's a new Superman in town! David Corenswet, known for his roles
in A24's Pearl and Ryan Murphy's The Politician, has been officially cast as
Clark Kent/Superman in James Gunn's upcoming film Superman: Legacy. Joining
him is Rachel Brosnahan from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, who will take on the
equally important role of Lois Lane.
The decision to cast a new Superman comes with high stakes, especially after the underwhelming performance of The Flash at the box office. The hope of restoring DC's glory now rests on the Last Son of Krypton. The Hollywood Reporter provided some details about Gunn's casting process and the final contenders for the roles of Clark and Lois.
The three final pairs of actors included Nicholas Hoult and Brosnahan, Emma
Mackey and Corenswet, and Tom Brittney and Phoebe Dynevor. They performed
scenes together during screen tests, with the men portraying Clark Kent. It's
worth noting that earlier contenders for the roles included Jacob Elordi,
Andrew Richardson, and Samara Weaving, as reported by The Wrap in May.
The next day, the male actors appeared in Superman costumes, while Mackey was
the only one auditioning for Lois Lane. However, this didn't guarantee her the
role. Corenswet's casting is significant as he becomes the first American
actor to portray Superman on the big screen since Brandon Routh in 2006's
Superman Returns.
Will David Corenswet become a better and more successful Superman than Henry Cavill? Only time can tell.
Following these key castings, Gunn will focus on filling other important
roles, such as Lex Luthor, for which both Alexander and Bill Skarsgard are
being considered. There are rumors that Hoult may also be involved in the
film, potentially as Luthor.
Gunn, who became co-chair and co-CEO of DC Studios alongside producer Peter Safran, has plans for the future of the DC Universe. This includes a TV show centered around Amanda Waller from The Suicide Squad, an animated series called Creature Commandoes, and another Batman film focused on Bruce Wayne and his son. However, Gunn sees Superman: Legacy as the true beginning of the DCU and a glimpse into his vision for the studio's future.
Superman: Legacy is scheduled for release on July 11, 2025, and filming is
expected to begin in early 2024. The last standalone Superman film was 2013's
Man of Steel, although the character appeared in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of
Justice and both versions of Justice League. Henry Cavill, the previous
Superman, announced in December 2022 that he would not be returning,
respecting the studio's decision for a new direction.
